If self-understanding is your goal, you’ll definitely want to find descriptions other than “religious” and “spiritual” to help with the task.  Each of these words is currently subject to wildly different definitions and therefore connotations.  We should probably define each in every context we use them less readers import their own, often different, meanings, and therefore misunderstand whatever point we’re trying to make.

As for a more proper self-understanding for the people of God, consider returning to the biblical (should I say “narrative/historical” to better hold your attention?) model of Abraham versus the current Evangelical model of, let us say, Charlie Churchmember.

God told Abraham, “Walk before Me and be blameless.”  If you put yourself in the place of Abraham and Christ in the place of God we have a Christianity fully form-fitting with the kingdom of God.
