Romans 5

Having been justified, therefore, by faith we[fn]The first person plural should be understood not collectively (“we saved individuals”) but corporately (“we as God’s redeemed family of Abraham”).[/fn] have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have gained access [in/by the faith] to this grace in which we have stood, and we boast in hope of the glory of God. 3 And not only that, but we also boast in the afflictions, knowing that affliction produces perseverance, 4 and perseverance approval, and approval hope; 5 and the hope does not put to shame, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit which was given to us.

6 For still Christ, we being weak, still in due time died for the ungodly. 7 For only rarely for a righteous man will anyone die; for for the good man possibly someone might even dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates his own love to us because we yet being sinners Christ died for our sakes.[fn]Although it appears that Paul is speaking quite generally here, it is important to keep in mind that he is engaged rhetorically in a dialogue with the Jews, whom he regards as being currently at enmity with God.[/fn] 9 Much more then, now having been justified in his blood, shall we be saved through him from the wrath. 10 For if being enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, much more being reconciled shall we be saved by his life; 11 and not only that, but also boasting in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom now we received reconciliation.

12 For this reason as through one man sin passed-into the world, and through sin death, and so to all men death passed-through—inasmuch as all sinned, 13 for until the Law sin was in the world, but sin is not counted with the Law not being; 14 but death reigned from Adam until Moses even over those not having sinned after the likeness of the transgression of Adam, who is a type of the one to come.

15 But not as the trespass, so also the charisma. For if by the trespass of one the many died, much more surely have the grace of God and the gift in grace of the one man Jesus Christ to the many overflowed. 16 And not as through one man having sinned is the gift; for whereas judgment from the one led to condemnation, the charisma from the many trespasses to justification. 17 For if by the trespass of one, death came to reign through the one, much more surely will those receiving the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign through the one man Jesus Christ.

18 So then as through one trespass for all men to condemnation, so also through one righteous act for all people to justification of life. 19 For as through the disobedience of the one man the many were constituted sinners, so also through the obedience of the one the many will be constituted righteous. 20 Law came in so that the trespass increased; but where sin increased, grace over-abounded, 21 that even as sin came to reign in death, so also the grace might reign through righteousness to life of the age, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
